When we are children we have dreams that are bigger than ourselves. We dream of being princesses, and super hero’s or maybe evens a movie star. Some of us fall short of becoming these dreams that seem to be unrealistic, while others strive to be the next big thing, and succeed. For women like Angelina Jolie these things never seemed out of reach to her. She has become a well-known celebrity and continues to succeed in almost everything she does. However Jolie is not only famous for her incredible acting skills but also for her charity work she has done around the world. While looking into traveling I have discovered it is not about where you go it’s about who you’re with, and Angelina Jolie does an incredible job of demonstrating this with her charity and mission work around the world, striving to help improve and change the lives of the young and old she encounters on her travels to foreign countries.
Often times we go about our lives careless or clueless of what is occurring in the world around us. We may be unaware of a war that is being fought externally or internally in the people or the countries around us. In Jolie’s journal entries we see this is very evident due to the constant unfortunate events that appear to be reoccurring in the journal entry for Sudan. She begins the entry with the opening statement: “90 days to stop another disaster in Africa: unfolding crisis in Sudan could see 300,000 deaths”. Immediately I am caught off guard and surprised by the astonishing statement. Most people would hear this on the news and either ignore it or do everything in their power to avoid any sort of contact with this issue, however Angelina Jolie makes an effort to travel to Sudan and perform a series of tasks to make the environment safer. She went in to Sudan with a team on a mission to provide protection for the people who have lost their way or been misplaced during the crisis, create conditions that would be conductive to the return of the lost individuals, and finally, to return the lost individuals to where they are originally from or to bring them to a common area where they could be reunited with loved ones. Jolie’s actions were not only brave, but also selfless, as she put herself at risk in a country that is not her own and to enter into such a dangerous territory without any sort of body guard to ensure her safety. She then discusses another headline that makes the situation seem more real to her as well as the audience: “More than a million people have been displaced in 18 months of violence. The official UN figures 1.6 million IDP’s (lost individuals) and 200,000 refugees to Chad”. Angelina Jolie then begins on her next mission to Khartoum and fears for her life because they warned them to be safe on the roads due to a recent explosion killing 2 other individuals on the same type of mission she was on. Jolie arrived late to her location she planned to be stationed at and shortly after helped to bring 21,535 metric tons of food to the village. Jolie’s selfless actions to travel to such a dangerous area at such a dangerous time nearly saved 1,336,922 crisis affected people’s lives. Jolie did not allow the fact that she is a well-known celebrity to interfere with the work she did to help the people in danger in Sudan and other African countries.
Waking up with a roof over our head everyday isn’t something many people have to work that hard for or struggle to keep; or so some think. In America most of us are fortunate enough to live in some sort of house with our own rooms and perhaps even bathroom. In Angelina Jolie’s journal entries we discover that this is not so in foreign countries. She travels to a small village like territory however it is not a village it is a safer ground where the people from many different villages in that area have been told to stay. She looks around to see only small huts made out of unstable material and notices one in particular. She proceeded to ask about the hut in concern for their healthy living: “I notice a small area with to kids playing in the dirt. I ask “How many people in those two rooms?” I would guess it was six feet by four feet. “Twelve people” she answers”. She stared at the woman in shock question how such a thing was possible. Jolie, like most of us have never been exposed to such conditions and began looking for other possible solutions to help solve such huge problem. She continues asking around about peoples current living situations and the homes and villages they used to live in. Jolie discovers most individuals she asked were living in homes and villages that were constantly under attack or for some reason unsafe. She began taking action to try to help in prove this problem once again. Jolie makes selfless actions to try to help clean up the safe villages they currently have to live in and begins taking action by assigning different people as well as herself to vacant villages that were unsafe. Jolie continued to perform selfless tasks in order to try to help improve the lives of the individuals in the unsafe conditions and tried to help bring a sense of hope to those suffering.
Maybe our childish dreams aren’t so childish after all. Maybe we can be a super hero or a princess to someone; maybe we just have to look below the surface a little bit to make these things possible. Angelina Jolie has proven to us that life isn’t all about the fame, but using that fame to help change and better the lives of the people around us. Jolie took advantage of the fact that she has the capability of making a huge difference and selflessly performed actions that most of us would be hesitant to even consider.
During the time that I wrote this I feel that my essay improved. I worked very hard to get together sources from Angelina Jolie’s journals she wrote while she was away on one of her trip to Sudan. She traveled to different many different parts of Africa and met and helped many different people. I think that I have done a good job of analyzing how she lives out a dream that many of us have always had of being a celebrity but using that power to help change the lives of others that are less fortunate. I helped to portray how her actions towards helping others we very selfless and how the good she has done as impacted the lives of others.

Now a day’s people will do anything to make a long trip less boring especially a plane ride. There is now a new app that has been created in hopes that individuals will purchase it and have a more pleasant flight. This app is called Quicket and was originally designed to make travel easier however it now also can serve as a form of entertainment for users. This app now has a link to Facebook so all individuals on their flights can download it and potentially figure out who they will be sitting next to, who the attractive guy is a couple rows up, or just to pass the time getting to know a couple strangers while you’re all stuck on the same flight. While I think this app could be helpful or interesting to some it can be very unsafe to have that sort of information linked to an app that anyone on your flights can view while on the flight or even after the luggage has been collected and everyone has gone their separate ways. It is crazy to think that the app has been described as a way to get a date or just have casual conversations over the messaging on the app. I think that flights can be a great way to meet people however I do not think that it should be done through such unsafe means or by hiding behind a phone screen. I know every time I fly anywhere my first move would be to get to know all the people on my flight, maybe the person next to me or in front of me but it would be odd to have access to all of their Facebook pages and other such info. I think this app is unsafe and should not be promoted on flights or airlines such as delta because that’s an easy way for a stalking case to start or much worse. I do however think that this app is helpful in the means of traveling convenience because you can easily find out if there an open window seat when you currently have the aisle seat, or to check in for a flight or even buy a ticket. That was what the app was originally made for and it should stay that way rather than adding Facebook or other unnecessary information to the mix.
We all have that group of friends at some point in our lives that seems to be inseparable no matter what happens or where time takes us. However at some point we all have to go our separate ways and keep in contact as best as possible. In the movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants four best friends spend their first summer apart from one another, they share a magical pair of jeans. Despite being of various shapes and sizes, each one of them fits perfectly into the pants. To keep in touch they pass these pants to each other as well as the adventures they are going through while apart. They all experience things In that summer that changes their lives and the pants seems to be what keeps the girls together. The movie does a good job of making you feel as though you are a part of every adventure the girls and pants go on. By the end of the movie you are feeling as though you have developed a personal relationship with the girls and other individuals in the movie. I am not usually one to cry in movies however this one seemed to pull at my heart strings most likely because I can relate, or the friends in my group of friends, to the things the girls are going through.
Traveling has almost always been considered something for the wealthy and those individuals with too much time on their hands. I admit I am guilty to having this sort of thought process and in the back of my mind I always figured I wouldn’t be able to travel much since I am not filthy rich and stay more busy than I sometimes like. After reading a young bloggers recent post “The Pros and Cons of Travel” I was quickly corrected.
Amanda, the author of this post, describes her travels she has embarked on and elaborates on how there are many ups to traveling as well as downs. She begins with the pros of traveling by stating how traveling can provide a temporary get away. She begins by saying: “Travel is the perfect form of escapism – far better than reading a book or watching a movie – because it actually means you get to leave your current situation. You can trade in whatever is making you unhappy for something different, even if it’s just for a little while.” Although I may be young and I also have not explored the world as much as she has I agree to this statement because in high school I would get fed up with the people I was dealing with on a daily basis and I would make plans to go out of town that weekend. Often times it just takes the slightest change in scenery to help smooth over a tough or annoying situation. She then proceeds to discuss how traveling is a learning experience. Every trip you go on may not be a complete “life changer” however it is easy for me to say that every trip no matter how big or small, does in some way impact and leave a lasting mark in your life. Traveling is an eye opener weather you are traveling somewhere out of the country or just a state over, you are almost guaranteed to encounter a situation or type of scenery you would not have experienced if you did not travel to that location. Traveling is not only a learning experience about the world outside of your day to day routine, traveling is also about learning about yourself and growing as in independent individual. Briefly, Amanda touches on the spontaneity and adventure traveling can bring by saying “Travel can open up so many doors and provide for so many adventures, both planned and spontaneous. If you’re in the mood to make a lasting memory, get out and see the world. Let life happen, both to you and around you, and just go with it.” Lastly in the positives of traveling she explains that the common misconception, that you have to be wealthy to travel, is just an assumption and that in fact traveling to some countries can be more inexpensive than the area you currently live in. By choosing places to travel to that are less luxurious and have a lower cost of living she states that a little can go a long way.
Although there are many pros to traveling, it also has many negative or dangers. Amanda begins by saying how the escapism factor definitely is beneficial for a brief getaway but to some getting away can look more like running away. Often times it is easy to have a desire to get away from a current or ongoing problem but running away from your problems for long periods of time is not healthy and the author does not advise suing travel for this reason. Next, Amanda makes the point that no matter how fun, exciting, and adventurous traveling can be, it can also be exhausting and this can lead people into feeling homesick. However the author does point out that the newer forms of social media make it easier to communicate with your loved ones back home through sites such as Skype, Facebook, and many more. Being homesick is one thing, but missing out on things back home make staying at your current home away from home somewhat difficult. As much as we want and hope that we don’t miss things while we are traveling it is hard to make everything at home stop what is currently going on to wait for you to get a back. Life will continue to go on without you while you are away but that’s just another thing you must take into account when making plans to travel. Finally Amanda concludes by admitting that while you don’t necessarily have to be rich to travel you do have to make a fair income to travel to far away, more exotic places, often. Though most of my vacations have been paid for by my parents the one that I have paid for are often times a large chunk of change, whether that consists of a spring break trip or something much larger than that I have learned that travel is never something that is completely inexpensive.
Traveling is something that I have always looked forward to when I was younger. I am now coming up with more realistic and less costly options than I had originally hoped for. I think that traveling is something that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in no matter the cost or time it may consume. The pros of traveling most definitely outweigh the cons and after reading this I feel as though I will travel smarter and look for deals wherever they may be hiding.

When we are children we have blooming imaginations and almost any scenario seems possible. Time travel was always something that was something we all wondered about but never believed was possible. In the movie a young Rachel McAdams meets a middle aged man who she encounters at different times in her life and eventually falls in love with him. They dream of getting married and starting a life together but his unawareness of when he will disappear and travel in time again makes things progressively worse and more complicated to keep a stable and somewhat normal relationship. Eventually, his time travel seems to appear more stable and they agree to get married and start a life together. Despite his frequent and lengthy travel through time she gets pregnant and has a child. Although she becomes more frustrated with the fact that he is a very distant part of her and their daughters’ life they continue the relationship and do all they can to make it work. His time travel takes them to all different parts of the world at different points all throughout their relationship. Though we know time travel is not a real thing we often dream of experiencing time travel despite the consequences it may bring to our lives somewhat like the movie. I personally have traveled to a few different parts of the world and know if I was given the opportunity to go back in time to when I visited those places I would.
